How to remove Proudly powered by WordPress from WordPress Twenty Sixteen theme

Twenty sixteen is a theme provided by wordpress.org with a modernized take on an ever-popular WordPress layout. The theme provides horizontal masthead with an optional right sidebar that works perfectly for blogs and websites. It has custom color options with beautiful default color schemes, a harmonious fluid grid using a mobile-first approach, and impeccable polish in every detail. Twenty Sixteen will make your WordPress look beautiful everywhere.

The Problem

By default, the footer display Proudly powered by WordPress as below.

This is not always desirable and sometimes we would want to remove this and instead show a copyright with current year.

The Solution

Edit the theme via the Theme Editor to replace this with a copyright. The steps are as below.

 1. Go to Appearance > Theme Editor
 1. From the right sidebar (Theme Files), open footer.php
 1. Comment the Proudly powered by WordPress anchor tag. Add © <?php echo date('Y'); ?> (copyright and current year information) to the site-title div.

Conclusion

Now, the footer displays only the copyright along with the current year and site title as below.

If you want to remove the slash at the end, add the following css to Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS
